Your child first dental visit

Your child first dental visit

Your child’s first trip to the dentist must not be traumatic. Therefore we are patient, understanding and deals well with children.

Children should first visit a dentist by their first birthday as dental problems can start even at an early age. Young teeth are especially vulnerable to tooth decay. We check for early signs of tooth decay, remove tartar (hardened plaque), and make sure that the teeth are properly aligned with no signs of jaw malformation.

There are other things you can do to make the first visit less of a hassle and more of a pleasant experience.

  1. Never scare your children when preparing them for dental visits. Never tell your child “do not be afraid”.
  2. Do a “practice run”. Visit the dental office with your child before the actual visit, during this “practice run” your child can acquaint himself with this new environment and meet the new dentist.
  3. You can prepare your child with having a dentist “meddle” inside their mouth by wiping their gums clean or brushing their teeth on a regular basis. With this, they will become accustomed to an adult working on their teeth and gums.

Visit us for a consultation and we will take care of your child’s teeth.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

During Pregnancy, inflammation of the gums can happen as a result of estrogen and progesterone. Therefore removal of plaque can reduce or eliminate gingivitis. Women with periodontal disease may be at risk of pre-term, low-birth weight babies.

Neglecting oral hygiene during pregnancy can lead to developing pregnancy tumors- inflammatory. These are benign growths that develop when swollen gum. Usually these tumors shrink soon after the pregnancy is over.

Morning sickness causing vomiting causes the erosion of the teeth due to acids. Neutralizing the acids is important by using a paste made of baking soda and water, rubbing it on the teeth. After 30 seconds, rinse off the paste, then brush and floss. Oral contraceptive pills can lead to gingivitis, and they are more likely to develop dry socket.

Visit before planning to get pregnant and during pregnancy. We will instruct you how to  prevent any gum and tooth problems during pregnancy.

Some sports can harm your teeth

Some sports can harm your teeth

Swimming is a wonderful sport but it can harm your teeth. Spending more than 6 hours a week in a pool can cause staining of your teeth. This is caused by the chemicals used to chlorinate the pool interacting with the saliva. The chemicals can also cause erosion of your teeth which leads to tooth sensitivity and loss of the outer enamel.

If you are an athlete, or exercise often this can affect your teeth. Workouts reduces saliva which is supposed to keep the PH level of the mouth neutral.  Furthermore athletes tend to during energy drinks that have low PH. They also tend to bite hard on their teeth during work outs. This leads to tooth an gum problems.

If you’re an athlete, drop by and let us take a look at your teeth and help you protect your teeth and enjoy your favorite sport.
